A cup of joe a day may keep Alzheimer's at bay

If you are of those people who can't make it through the day without a few cups of coffee or a favorite cola, word comes that caffeine may have a benefit beyond helping to keep you alert.

All that caffeine actually may protect you against Alzheimer's disease.

Long-term intake of caffeine -- the chemical stimulant common to coffee and many teas and soft drinks -- may help delay or reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's, scientists now say. They found that mice genetically predisposed to the degenerative brain disease were protected against memory impairment if they consumed 500 mg of caffeine daily, the equivalent of five cups of coffee a day.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Johnnie B. Byrd Sr. Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Fla., will appear in the next issue of the journal, Neuroscience.

Coalition to Protect Hawaiian Coffee

Our heartfelt thanks to the Coalition to Protect Hawaiian Coffee (CPHC).

Mahalo to all the collaborating organizations for protecting the
Hawaii Coffee Industry from the possibility of GMO contamination from
even a field trial. Thank you for setting an example that that has been
nationally recognized.

The Rice Industry is suffering greatly right now from GMO contamination
from a field trial of Liberty Link (LL160) long rice. They have lost
Japanese and European markets. Farmers are suing. Contamination has
been found as far away as California and even in short rice.

The CPHC's actions to protect Hawaiian coffee have hopefully protected
us from the ills that the rice industry are going through.

Sincerely,

Melanie Bondera & Christine Sheppard

By Cindy Fisher, Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Sunday, October 1, 2006

CAMP SCHWAB, Okinawa — Espresso, cappuccinos and lattes used to be more than an hour’s drive away for people stationed at Camp Schwab.

But with the opening of Schwabucks coffeehouse Friday, specialty coffee is a lot closer to home.

Schwabucks, in the USO on Camp Schwab, will serve free coffee to servicemembers 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays and 6-11 p.m. Fridays, said Lt. David Thames, the 4th Marines chaplain who helped establish the coffeehouse.

NYC Starbucks to add breakfast sandwiches

The Associated Press

Starbucks — seeking to become more than a morning destination for coffee — will introduce warm breakfast sandwiches and pastries to the New York City market next week.

Similar breakfast fare has been slowly appearing in other urban U.S. markets in what has been viewed as a measured expansion of its business. The nation’s largest specialty coffee retailer has estimated that warm breakfast food could add $30,000 a year to an average store’s sales.

The move is an effort to cash in on food sales now going to an array of rivals, from fast-food giants such as McDonald’s and Burger King to myriad delicatessens, bakeries and restaurants.
