During the summer, coffee shops partially turn into soda fountains or ice cream shops, offering an array of drinks that can freeze your brain and stimulate it all in the same slurp. Call it the brrrr and buzz phenomenon. Iced coffee has been around for generations, but modern coffeehouses go beyond that, ever since Starbucks came up with its now-trademarked frappuccino.

Coffee, tea recalled

Oklahoma City-based Neighbors Coffee expanded an earlier coffee recall Monday to include 300 to 500 pounds of bulk tea that contain undeclared almonds.

On Friday, the company pulled from shelves whole-bean, nut-flavored coffee for label errors that failed to note almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts and pecans in the coffee.

The affected tea was sold in two-pound packages as caffeinated and decaffeinated Amaretto Tea and Cherry Almond Tea.

Consumers can exchange the recalled tea at the place of purchase or receive a refund. For details, call (800) 299-9016.

Hawaii coffee production rebounds

Coffee production grew 11 percent in the 2003-2004 season, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture reports. Production gains across the state exceeded a drop in Big Island production.


It bodes well for this coming season's harvest, because Kona growers are expecting an improved harvest this year, especially in the higher grades.

Seattle's Best Coffee coming to more than 400 Borders stores

Starbucks Corp. of Seattle said it has struck a deal with Borders Group Inc. to open cafes of its Seattle's Best Coffee subsidiary in more than 400 Borders Books & Music Stores. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Unlike Starbucks' deal with its own brand in Barnes & Noble stores, Borders will operate the stores itself under a licensing agreement.
