Americans drinking better but less coffee: poll

By Marcy Nicholson

AVENTURA, Florida (Reuters) - More Americans are drinking gourmet coffee than ever before but fewer people overall are having any kind of coffee every day, the National Coffee Association of USA (NCA) said on Saturday.

More than 6,000 adults in the United States were questioned in a telephone and Internet poll in January and February for the 2008 National Coffee Drinking Trends survey to be published in May. Preliminary data was released at the NCA's annual convention in Florida.

According to the survey, 17 percent of adults drank gourmet coffee daily -- up from 14 percent in 2007. Gourmet coffee includes espresso-based drinks.

But overall daily coffee consumption eased to 55 percent of adults from 57 percent a year ago. In 2004, the figure was 49 percent.

Daily consumption by 18-to-24-year-olds fell to 26 percent from a high of 37 percent in 2007, the NCA said.

Hawaii backs off ban on genetic coffee

By Mark Niesse
ASSOCIATED PRESS

7:42 p.m. March 5, 2008

HONOLULU – Hawaii won't ban genetically altered coffee, a decision that worries growers of the prized Kona coffee brand who want to keep it pure.

State lawmakers shelved a bill Wednesday that would have prohibited growing genetically modified coffee in Hawaii until 2012. Instead, they want to order a study into the science, benefits and dangers of genetically enhanced crops.

Coffee farmers worried that genetically modified coffee could contaminate expensive Kona blends, which are only grown on Hawaii's Big Island and exported worldwide.

P&G ups cost of Folgers, Dunkin' Donuts coffees

Mon Mar 3, 2008 4:22pm EST

Reuters

NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) - The largest U.S. roaster increased the list prices of some of its Folgers coffees, for the second time in three weeks, and a Dunkin' Donuts coffee, citing climbing green coffee prices, a Procter & Gamble (PG.N: Quote, Profile, Research) spokesman said on Monday.

P&G hiked the list prices of some of its Folgers coffees by 3.5 to 7 percent, and Dunkin' Donuts by 6 percent, effective immediately. The price increase was P&G's second since Feb. 11, Bryan Brown said.

"Green coffee prices have continued to rise sharply over the past three weeks. This past week New York "C" arabica and London robusta markets have traded at more than 20 cents per pound versus our previously stated price for Folgers mainstream coffee," Brown said.

Woooo a new look for BCE

I might have to say after updating the graphics, etc. for Badgett's Coffee eJournal that BCE has quite an impressive collection of archived posts. In fact we are now linking to these posts going back to July of 2002. BCE has been publishing just about anything related to coffee since May of 2000. That's alot of publishing!

Feel free to comment on the new layout. The previous format was used for six years. Chances are that we will be retaining this format for awhile too.
