Study on Caffeine Intake and Hypertension

American Beverage Association Statement on Study on Caffeine Intake and Hypertension

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Beverage Association issued the following statement in response to "Habitual Caffeine Intake and the Risk of Hypertension in Women," a study published in the November issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association:

"The authors themselves acknowledge the limitations of their study and state that it is too soon to draw any conclusions regarding soft drinks.

Other factors are known to be associated with hypertension, such as lifestyle, stress, personality, behavior and other health conditions, and further study could help determine the relative importance of these factors as compared to consumption of soft drinks.

Importantly, no association was found in this study between hypertension and consumption of caffeine, one of the most widely studied ingredients in the food supply today. The study, involving more than 150,000 women, excludes caffeine as a risk factor for hypertension, not only in coffee and tea but most likely in soft drinks, which contain substantially less caffeine than these other beverages."

The American Beverage Association is the trade association representing the broad spectrum of companies that manufacture and distribute non-alcoholic beverages in the United States.

About Ethiopia, Save the Children, Share Our Strength and illy

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and grows the world's highest quality washed Arabica coffee. Illy purchases the best quality Ethiopian beans at a premium price and has devised a processing procedure that increases crop quality significantly with little investment. The system reduces water usage in this drought prone land. This increased quality translates into increased income for the individual coffee growers. As well as co-funding the project with the International Coffee Organization and the Common Fund for Commodities, illy sends its qualified technicians to work on site and assist growers during the harvesting and processing stages as a further quality assurance. By increasing the value of the Ethiopian coffee farmer's crop, illy insures that farmers realize a profit for their efforts. This reflects illy's global policy of ethical and sustainable development throughout coffee growing countries.

125 million children in Africa have no access to basic education. To help further improve the current situation in Ethiopia, illy joined forces with Share Our Strength and Save the Children to support community schools in Ethiopia. The community school is Save the Children's flagship approach to quality basic education in high poverty areas. In addition to educating boys and girls, the schools act as a community resource, providing health and nutrition education, basic health services such as first aid, immunization and de-worming, and adult literacy classes.

Coffee might help women's blood pressure

By LINDSEY TANNER
AP MEDICAL WRITER

CHICAGO -- Here's good news for women who love coffee: Drinking it doesn't seem to cause long-term high blood pressure, a study suggests.

But for some reason, women in the same study who drank colas did seem to have a greater risk of high blood pressure. Researchers were surprised at that and cautioned that the study wasn't conclusive.

Caffeine is a well-known ingredient in both beverages, and has been shown to cause short-term increases in blood pressure. But coffee drinkers in the study were no more likely than abstainers to develop high blood pressure during 12 years of follow-up.

Arabica coffee output may drop 25%

Bangalore: The white stem borer menace could have eaten up close to 25 per cent of the country's arabica coffee crop this year, according to the United Planters Association of India (Upasi).

A severe drought in the last two seasons has resulted in rapid borer infestation that may see a 25 per cent drop in arabica output over the initial Coffee Board crop estimates of 1.05 lakh tonnes, said C.P. Kariappa, Chairman (Coffee Committee), Upasi.

"The damage caused by the borer infestation is much more than what we have imagined," Kariappa told a press conference on Monday.
