Off the power grid

Is on-site energy production the answer to erratic electric service?

By JOAN LOWY, Scripps Howard News Service

For most Americans, a blip of a few seconds or even a few minutes in their electricity supply is a minor annoyance.

But for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury, Vt., every blip meant dumping 600 pounds of burned beans, not to mention the potential for a serious fire and many hours of cleanup while production was halted.

That's because when power to roasting machines is interrupted, coffee beans may already be so hot - close to 490 degrees F - that they continue to cook and can combust if not doused with water.

Grounds on the ground: Coffee's remains invigorate gardens

Suzanne Hively
Plain Dealer Garden Editor

When staffers at Ohio State University Extension Service in Cuyahoga County get a cup of coffee at a shop across the street from their office, they usually grab some coffee grounds to go.

The recipients of the coffee grounds are plants growing in community gardens.

Coffee grounds are considered a good nitrogen source, and combined with brown material, such as leaves or straw, they generate heat to speed up the composting process.

Ready to Dispense (RTD) Coffee Revolutionizing the Coffee Industry

Princeton, Mass. – X Café LLC, the originator of shelf-stable 30:1 coffee extracts, is revolutionizing the way coffee is served across the country. The company’s Liquid Coffee Bag-in-Box product, when combined with a liquid coffee dispenser, provides a continuous supply of fresh and consistent coffee on demand 24/7, eliminating coffee lines and reducing labor. Health care facilities, university cafeterias, banquet facilities, fast food restaurants, convenience stores, casinos, cruise ships and the military use Liquid Coffee Bag-in-Box extensively.

Paul Kalenian, President of X Café LLC, said, “Recent technological advances in liquid coffee extraction and improvements in bag-in-box packaging have combined to allow the coffee industry to take back 40 years of decline in stomach share. We live in a world where convenience, consistent taste and quality of product are expected. The new ‘Ready to Dispense’ (RTD) division of the coffee industry is revolutionizing the way coffee is being served everywhere.”

X Café has developed a patented extraction process wherein the taste, varietal characteristics, body and aroma of a fresh brewed cup of arabica coffee is preserved in a shelf stable liquid concentrate. No refrigeration or freezing of product is necessary, and no instant coffee is used. A shelf-stable liquid coffee program provides consistent taste and aroma, whether it’s one cup or thousands of cups, with improved convenience to end-users. For the foodservice operator, it means no waste, no grinds, no mess, no stale coffee, no pilferage, and no labor in a space saving alternative.

The 30:1 concentrate product is made from fresh roasted 100% Colombian Arabica beans and is available in Medium Roast or Dark Roast, regular and decaffeinated. Taking its cue from Coca Cola Fountain Service, the X Café product is packaged in ½ gallon and 1 gallon Bag-in-Box, literally a bag within a box, which is placed inside a dispenser and metered into cups of coffee on demand. As a result, the coffee is always fresh.

No waiting for coffee to be brewed means more satisfied customers served. Liquid coffee dispenser options include by the cup or by the pot, high volume, portion control, continuous feed, bar gun, 1 to 5 brew heads – all with adjustable brew strength.

“Our premium coffee Bag-in-Box always has ‘on demand’ convenience, with the great taste, flavor and fragrance of fresh brewed,” says Paul Kalenian, President of X Café LLC. “Liquid Coffee Bag-in-Box is the most rapidly growing segment of the coffee industry, and it’s expected to capture 25% of all coffee sales by 2006. The future of the coffee industry is RTD (ready to dispense), and X Café is at the forefront of this exciting new technology.”

X Café LLC can be reached at PO Box 1100, 104 Merriam Road, Princeton, Massachusetts 01541, www.x-cafe.com or 978-464-8010. All coffee extract processing is performed at the company’s state-of-the-art extraction facility in Portland, Maine and sold through coffee roasters and beverage distributors worldwide.
