Grounds on the ground: Coffee's remains invigorate gardens

When staffers at Ohio State University Extension Service in Cuyahoga County get a cup of coffee at a shop across the street from their office, they usually grab some coffee grounds to go.

The recipients of the coffee grounds are plants growing in community gardens.

Coffee grounds are considered a good nitrogen source, and combined with brown material, such as leaves or straw, they generate heat to speed up the composting process.
