How safe is drinking coffee, really?

Caffeine is the most popular drug in the world and among the most-studied food substances. But what, if any, health risks are associated with this central-nervous-system stimulant?

The American Heart Association reports that studies investigating a direct link between caffeine, coffee drinking and coronary heart disease "have produced conflicting results." However, according to the association, "moderate coffee drinking (one to two cups per day) doesn't seem harmful."

In its official statement, the American Dietetic Association notes that "no scientific evidence has been found to link moderate caffeine intake to any health risks, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, fibrocystic breast disease or birth defects."
