The Status Quo of the Chinese Coffee Market

With so many kinds of teas, do the Chinese really like drinking coffee?
The answer of coffee companies and the Mainland’s coffee consumers is “Yes”. Not until the year of 1980 did foreign companies open their coffee market in China, but now coffee has become very popular. The contemporary Chinese young people prefer coffee bars to teahouses. At the very beginning, some people thought coffee could never conquer any market in the tea-consuming region, but according to the results of a survey conducted in 12 Chinese inland cities, 32% of the urban dwellers drink coffee. The survey also shows that half of the people go to western restaurants at least once a year. The coffee consumption of China in 2003 amounted to more than 400000 tons. It is learnt that in 2001 the sales of Nestle Coffee alone amounted to RMB7 billion yuan. Statistics also shows that presently the domestic consumption of coffee is increasing at an annual growth rate of 10%, and China is expected to become a big coffee consumer.
